Credit Card Debt Frequently
Asked Questions
Credit Card Debt Frequently Asked
Questions
When it comes to credit cards, most people have a lot of
questions. In this session we are going to answer the most
common questions related to credit card debt such as, “How much
credit card debt is too much? How many credit cards are too
many? Why do credit card companies make it so easy to obtain
credit cards?”
How Many Credit Cards Are Too Many? When
it comes to this question, there are tons of people providing
expert advice and amazingly, many of them disagree. Some say,
two to three credit cards. Others say three to four credit
cards and still other say around five to six. The bottom line?
Use common sense and good judgment. Generally speaking, when a
person has too many credit cards, they create a number of debt
problems.
- They tend not to keep track of the balances, fees,
payments and additional charges
- Getting in the bad habit of only making the minimum
payment
- Their credit card debt soon becomes overwhelming
- Start using credit cards for daily living expenses
- Their numerous balances can negatively effect their
overall credit score
- They tend to max out all their credit cards
- Having too many cards can make them look credit
hungry
If you have credit card debt, or, you are considering
getting a credit card or adding more cards to your wallet, then
pay attention. In these economic times of uncertainty, it’s
time to get a grip on credit card debt. In the past week
numerous major companies have announced layoffs, major losses
and closings. The big electronics retailer, Circuit City stated
that they would be closing 155 stores by December 31, 2008. It
may not seem like it, but all of these events have an overall
impact on credit card debt.
As companies make announcements about cutting back, lay
offs, etc., credit can tighten and suddenly become unavailable.
At the click of a mouse, a credit card company can slash your
credit line without notice. When that happens, if you are
depending on credit cards to sustain your daily living
expenses, you are in trouble!
Is There a Such Thing As Having Too Few Credit
Cards? Having too few credit cards only relates to
your overall credit score and nothing else. Creditors look to
see if you have credit history. Meaning that you have accounts
that have been open for a long time and paid as agreed. Without
sufficient credit history, creditors won’t have very much
information to evaluate your creditworthiness. Consequently you
will be a greater risk and will have a lower credit score.
Remember, the most important thing is not to be concerned about
how many credit cards to carry; but to keep you credit card
debt manageable.
Why Do Credit Card Companies Make It So Easy To
Obtain Credit? The primary goal of every credit
card company is to increase your credit card debt. If they fail
to achieve that goal, they won’t be in business very long. By
making it easy to obtain credit cards, they are increasing
their bottom line. On the other hand, if these companies
determine that you have too much credit card debt, they will
usually reduce or wipe out your credit line altogether. We have
more questions and answers to come, so stay tuned.
