9 Warning Signs To Help You Spot a Credit Counseling Rip Off a Mile Away (Part 1)

They Make Familty Credit Counseling Look Like Cops and Robbers
If you haven’t noticed, since we entered into this economic upheaval, bodacious con men have burst on the scene and they don’t care who they steal from or about the lives they ruin. These snakes have slithered into the “Family Credit Counseling” business and are wreaking havoc!

It has gotten so bad that even the IRS jumped on the bandwagon to at least attempt to slow these ingenious modern day crooks down. As of July 2009, they have revoked the non-profit status of over forty-one of these debt counseling and credit counseling flim flams.

In addition, across the nation, Attorney Generals, the FTC and Consumer Advocate groups are moving as fast as they can to identify these brazen crooks. Yet, even with the glaring spotlights shining on them, they continue to pop up because for them; the payoff is worth the risks!

In today’s session we’re going to give you nine signs to help you instantly spot a family credit counseling rip off. If you or anyone you know is seeking debt counseling, credit counseling or a debt management program, this information is crucial to yours and their success.

Family Credit Counseling Warning Sign #1
When other consumers have reported them on consumer advocate websites such as RipOffReport.com, Scam.com and ConsumerAffairs.com, running the other way is a no-brainer! These websites are a Godsend because they allow consumers like yourself to tell what happened to them and warn other consumers not to do business with such and such company. If you make this your first check, you can save yourself a lot of time. If a Family Credit Counseling company is on any of these website; something shady is going on.

The only exception to this rule would be if a disgruntled customer who didn’t follow the rules complains about a legitimate company. It happens… I had one such fuming customer contact our organization attempting to get us to cosign on his campaign to discredit Care One Credit. Turns out he had fifteen credit cards that he had MAXED out and never made one single solitary payment. He joined the Care One program and made a couple of payments and started SCREAMING bloody murder when the credit card companies told him that they had enough of his shenanigans. He blamed his financial collapse on them.

Never mind the fact that he ran up the fifteen different credit card accounts. He turned his nightmare over to them and had he followed instructions, he could have corrected his financial mess, but his intentions became crystal clear when he didn’t the accounts through Care One Credit as he agreed.

Then he had the audacity to contact DebErasure.com and implored us to help him bring Care One Credit to their knees. He was looking for another free ride; therefore his complaints were not valid.

Family Credit Counseling Warning Sign #2
The company doesn’t have the proper business license for your county or state. This presupposes that you are going to check and confirm. You would be amazed at how many of these illegitimate companies just up and launch without the proper licensing, bonding or certification. They will even go so far as to get a business license but it won’t be for credit counseling or debt counseling. They may get a general business license, that way they don’t have to get bonded or comply with any laws regarding debt counseling or credit counseling. By checking the stats of their license, you can avoid the scammers who are outright attempting to skirt the law.

Family Credit Counseling Warning Sign #3
The company is running “No Experience” job ads for sales reps. When these fly-night companies pop up on the scene, they always make a mad dash to get “Hard Nose – Hard Close” sales reps as quickly as possible. They will run job ads on Craigslist, on Backpages.com, on job boards, Monster.com, Indeed.com and in the local newspapers.

Of course, it’s commonplace for companies to run job ads, but these con artists are not looking for experienced, licensed, certified or college educated representatives. A trained financial consultant or expert will see right through their chicanery and deceptions. What they want are people who know how read a script and then proceed to hard close consumers using, trickery, deceptions, false advertising, coercion and manipulation. They want the type of people who will sell a 150-pound vacuum to their 89-year-old grandmother.

Family Credit Counseling Warning Sign #4
They are not a member of the BBB Better Business Bureau. Nor are they members of any accrediting agency in the debt or credit industry. This glaring absence reveals a crucial flaw; they are not willing to have neither their company nor their practices scrutinized by respectable consumer advocate agencies. That’s a major RED FLAG! When companies avoid scrutiny and refuse to meet accepted industry standards, make no mistake about it; they are hiding something!
