Free Credit Reports - Don’t Get Taken By
The Free Credit Report Hoaxes

If My Credit Reports Were Free Why Did They Charge My Credit Card?
Many consumers are being shocked as they are learning the hard way; companies advertising F-R-E-E Credit Reports are not actually providing FREE credit reports. Find out how they’ve made a mint using the old bait and switch tactic. Before you sign up for a FREE credit report, heed this Consumer Alert.

Hey Sweetie, I Just Signed Us Up To Receive Our Free Credit Report!
Mark and his wife were up late one night watching television because they simply couldn’t sleep. She was eight months pregnant and the baby kept all three of them up. Usually when a commercial comes on, Mark immediately switches the channel. But when he saw catchy commercial about obtaining all three of your credit reports for FREE; he was all ears.

This Deal Is a No-Brainer!
As Mark saw it the deal was a no-brainer; he didn’t have to pay anything and he’d get all three of his credit reports for free… he and his wife were planning on buying a home shortly after their baby was born and they felt now was a better time than any to make sure their credit reports were in order.

He made his way over to his computer, found the website and filled out the information form. As requested, he included his credit card number, which he was under the impression the site needed to verify and confirm his identity. Once he clicked the submit button, Mark proudly informed his wife that he had completed the Free Credit Report deal.

Every thing seemed fine until Mark’s wife was checking their credit card statement and noticed an unfamiliar charge. They believed they had signed up to receive a free report credit report, but in actuality Mark had enrolled in a credit monitoring service and they had charged his credit card three months straight before they caught what was going on. Sure the fee was miniscule at $15.00 per month, but that’s not the point.

The point is, this couple thought they had signed up to receive a FREE credit report, when in fact this was a recurring monthly charge for a service they really didn’t need. What happened to them was the classic bait and switch.

Numerous consumers are just like Mark and his wife, they didn’t see any indication that this was a credit monitoring service that entailed a monthly recurring charge. In addition, they didn’t see anything that stated if they didn’t cancel their subscription in thirty days, they would be billed on a monthly basis.

Consumer groups have stated their objections to these type of websites and their deceptive practices and rightfully so. The truth is, consumers may obtain a free credit report each year from the three major credit bureaus, Experian, Equifax and TransUnion. This was mandated by an act that Congress passed in 2003.

If you come across any type of advertisement boasting that they will provide you with a free credit report, take note, it’s a bait and switch! They are going to sign you up for something other than what you had expected. There is only one way to get a FREE Credit Report.
